    School Again

Nothing like it in the world.  The first day of school is special.  My 12 year old woke up extra early.  He had a Pre-AP summer assignment to polish off!  He was so excited too.  Picked out the exact shirt he wanted to wear and found out that some of his pants from last spring did not quite fit the same.  I think that football practice will take care of that for him.  The 15 year old on the other hand had a rude awakening.  Back to the 615AM wake up call from mom on her way back from the gym.  Day 4 was no different than day one, "bud, it is time to get up,"  and this reply, "huh? what?."  A splash of water on his face and he starts on his lo cal Monster.  Thankfully he doesn't start the day with math or science!  My first day of classes went well.  It is always interesting to see what combination of adults I have for each section that I teach.  Such diversity and differences from one section to the next and from semester to semester.  Overall, I think we are all on the right track and taking it one day at a time!

    Happiness

I have been thinking a lot about happiness.  David sent me an article from the Chronicle of Higher Ed about the tenth conference for Positive Psychology.  People spend a lot of time doing things, lots of things, but how much time do they spend on positive interactions and being happy.  At Texas PTA Summer Seminar I went to Kyle Ward's talk on Bucketology based on the book How Full is your Bucket.  I blogged about this session.  I really wish more people would spend more time filling others with positives.  The world would truly be a better place.  I am trying hard to keep positive and fill other people with positives and happiness.  But life does throw some negatives our way. We just have to find a way to turn them into positives. So, I hope you will help others and I will try to do the same by filling their buckets.

    Looking Down

It is always amazing to me what you can see if you look down. I love to look down and study what is growing under my feet. Not only what is growing, but who is roaming around down there. So many things that I would have probably crushed or stepped on and destroyed if I hadn't been paying attention to what was in the vicinity of my feet. Yesterday was a fungus day! I found so many different species of fungi. I am embedded a slideshow of my photos from the day. There are some photos of our stop in Memphis too. I just hope that you will stop and look down and appreciate the fungus, insects and spiders along the way!

    Night Life in Little Rock

When traveling sans children a whole new world opens up to you. There are so many more choices for dinner and activities that we wouldn't do because we wouldn't leave them in the hotel room alone. So, when we checked into our hotel we saw a sign for free transportation into the River Market Area. We got to our room, unloaded our stuff, worked out, cleaned up and then called down to the front desk to see about getting to the River Market. Little Rock is great. For about 8 blocks there are bars, restaurants and cafes all along President Clinton Drive (street lands you in front of the Presidential Museum). We walked up and down the street before choosing a place called Whiskeys, and giving them a chance to feed us. So nice to feel like a grown up and eating dinner in a bar, such a rare event for David and me. A variety of people were in the market area I imagine Friday and Saturday nights are even busier. The food was pretty good, and I tried a bourbon called Gentleman Jack. A departure from my normal crown and soda J.

A "real" club and outside the beltway

After several dropped hints, the husband decided to surprise me with an offer to try Cullen's Live (http://www.cullenshouston.com/cullens-live).  Live music, classy atmosphere and a little bit older crowd.  Perfect for a couple of 40 somethings who are starting to rediscover going out and doing other things besided falling asleep on the couch in the evening.  The band was from Austin and covered songs mostly from the 70s and some from the 80s.  Skyrocket!  The Band played hit songs from a variety of artists both male and female (http://www.myspace.com/skyrockettheband).  The best part of the evening was people watching.  Apparently, black and white prints are in vogue among the Cullen's female crowd.  Not just animal prints, but black and white in different combinations.  A few of the larger amongst these women would have better served by wearing more svelte looking darker combinations or just classic black.  Most of the men were going for the untucked look.  It would appear that the word on the street is that untucked equals you can't see my "beer" belly.  Instead these men had an unfinished, I just went to the bathroom look to them.  A few men were even uncouth enough to show up in flip flops.  Flip flops are my favorite pet peeve.  These shoes are cheap looking and should be relegated to the pool, beach, and or showerhouse.  What is wrong with dressing up from head to toe!  Hopefully, we will go out again and I will be able to make more observations.
